Evidensia expanding in Europe

One of Europe’s largest animal hospital groups grows by 60% a year and consolidates sector

Evidensia is going on the offensive and will lead the consolidation of the European veterinary market. The first step outside the Nordic countries was taken last summer with the acquisition of Bessy’s Tierklinik, one of Switzerland’s leading and internationally best-known animal hospitals. The European expansion has continued from there and this week Evidensia established itself in the Netherlands through the acquisition of Dierenzorggroep, the country’s leading animal hospital chain.

Evidensia is now one of Europe’s leading and largest chains for veterinary care.

The Evidensia Animal Hospital Group supplies veterinary services for pets and equine. Services range from daily routine care to the most advanced operations at our round-the-clock animal hospitals. The company was formed in 2012 when four large Swedish animal hospitals merged. Evidensia then expanded rapidly from Sweden into the other Nordic countries.

In September 2014, EQT stepped into to become the majority shareholder of Evidensia and since then the rate of expansion has quickened. In a little over a year, the number of wholly owned veterinary clinics has increased from 90 to nearly 160 and group revenue has increased from SEK 1.4bn to SEK 2.3bn – a growth rate of over 60%, mainly through acquisitions. The latest figures show that Evidensia receives more than 1.3 million customer visits annually and has over 2,200 employees.

Historically, the industry has been fragmented, but is currently undergoing big changes. Earlier owners, staff and animal owners saw the advantages of being part of a larger grouping to help improve quality and accessibility. Evidensia’s rapid expansion is proof of this.

A partial explanation for our success is our partnership model, which builds on the fact that previous owners continue to work for the company and remain part-owners. Large similarities between the different European markets provides obvious logic for continued consolidation. Growth is driven by increased demand for advanced veterinary care, as well as the fact that household pets are increasingly seen as members of the family.

Evidensia now has a presence in seven countries: Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Our ambition is to continue to grow in these existing markets and also to continue to expand to new countries. Our target for 2018 is to have doubled group revenue.
